If data is the new gold, then Data Scientists are the groundbreaking (literally?) experts excavating the data and refining it into valuable information. Many Data Scientists originally came from other fields like Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and Engineering. This presentation reviews the necessary skills for success as a Data Scientist, several use-cases of applications of Data Science, and a discussion of why Mathematics/Statistics majors have an advantage in the Data Science arena.

Colton Magnant, UPS首席数据科学家，美国克莱顿州立大学（Clayton University）数学系副教授，2008年获得埃默里大学（Emory University）博士学位，主要研究兴趣为图论和大数据科学，研究兴趣包括着色图中的子图存在性、彩虹连通度问题和Ramsey问题等，在J. Graph Theory、European J. Combinatorics、SIAM J. Discrete Mathematics和Discrete Mathematics等学科内国际主流SCI源期刊发表多篇论文，担任Theory and Applications of Graphs （TAG）主编，International J. Graph Theory and its Applications（IJGTA）编委。
